Kyra Citron

Kid's Corner, Director

Typical of a 13-year-old, Kyra Citron’s life evolves around school and family. She and her friends focus on classes and extra-curricular activities, which for Kyra include practicing Taekwondo (she’s a black belt), singing in the chorus (she’s a soprano), and acting (she’s in the school play and on the forensics team). She’s also a passionate reader, with over a dozen James Patterson novels already under her black belt.

But something else influences Kyra as well: her gift of empathy. From an early age she’s enjoyed meeting all kinds of people, including those less fortunate and the individuals committed to helping them. “It’s amazing how people do this every day of their life — work so hard to help others,” she explained.

Kyra discovered the rewards in giving back through her parents, who found she had an innate understanding and affinity for it. Since 9 years old she has been attending CLF site visits with her mother and the organization’s president, Jennifer Vertetis, observing operations, listening to discussions, and taking notes.  In 2011, Kyra became the Director of Kid’s Corner – where kids are empowered to change their world.

Kyra loves all the beneficiaries but felt most connected to Camp Merry Heart because it doesn’t matter who you are or what your limitations in life might be—as she says, you’re just a kid there. “Everyone should have the chance to go to summer camp,” she said. “The people there were so nice and really cared about all the campers.” When she grows up, she would love to get involved in an organization like Camp Merry Heart, either as a counselor or teacher.

Just as she gets totally immersed in a character while reading, Kyra is absorbing and connecting with the world of philanthropy. Caregivers inspire her and she feels more personally fulfilled knowing she’s making an effort. Ultimately, with her love of stories, Kyra would like to become a writer or English teacher. She’s already on her way by helping others achieve their own happy endings.
