Three students win $1,000 each for their school library and a Kindle Fire
The Charles Lafitte Foundation (CLF) is pleased to announce the student winners in its Kid’s Corner 2015 Spring Essay Contest.
Aditya Viswanathan Kaliappan, Grade 11 of Clarksburg High School (Clarksburg, MD); Amisha Singh, Grade 6 of Marlboro Memorial Middle School (Morganville, NJ); and Sanya Mehra, Grade 5 of Millstone River School (Plainsboro, NJ) wrote the winning essays and received a Kindle Fire, plus $1,000 for their school library.
The Spring Essay Contest invited all private or public students in grades 3-12, to submit an essay based on works of nonfiction. To participate, students read any book listed under their corresponding grade level, and wrote an essay on how the main character’s most important characteristic helped them overcome any obstacles.
“With a focus on nonfiction and heroic characters, the essays we received from participating students of all ages were insightful and thoughtful,” said Kyra Citron, director of Kid’s Corner. “The strength of these characters in each book clearly came through in their writing and it was great to see how the books inspired them to apply the lessons learned to their own lives.”
CLF’s Kid’s Corner strives to encourage kids to not only have a voice, but a role in helping better their community. Kid’s Corner is run by kids for kids, placing the power of change directly in their capable hands. Every child is invited to join with CLF and become a grant maker by communicating which non-profit organizations are important to them and how CLF can help make a difference.
